Designing Resilient Cities: Application
Guide Seeking, The Case Of İzmir Torbalı

In Küçük Menderes Basin, the center, west and south sections of the area
spanning 603 km² are plains and north, north-east and south-west sections
are mountainous areas covered with forests and scrublands. The strong
protectors of the city, which is affected by industrialization movement, are
biodiversity, hydrology, and climate. In this respect, urban forest, trees, and
creek can be considered in terms of their positive effects on the city. The fertile
agricultural land of Torbalı provide variety in agricultural activities. This means
providing diversity and innovation using local values and sources. Agricultural
production has benefitted the resilience of the city through regional economy.
The disruption of agricultural land in a region will increase its vulnerability.
As resilience is examined in future terms, agricultural lands can be examined
as an important element of resilience. Torbalı district has a largely flat land
structure. 54,65% of this fertile land, which yields products in three seasons
is cultivated. According to the findings of General Directorate of Land and
Water, more than half the soil is first class agricultural areas with alluvial nature.
Suitable for wet and dry architecture, these lands with a high capacity of water
capture allow any plant that can adapt to climate to grow Map8).
