Designing Resilient Cities: Application
Guide Seeking, The Case Of İzmir Torbalı
The dominant wind direction in Toralı is North-Northeast with 8km/hr speed.
The number of days with strongest winds are 20 days/year. The period with the
strongest winds is June-July-August summer months. On other days, the wind
strength is lowed, and its direction is variable. A temperature analysis was
made in the study area. When the afternoon temperatures were concerned,
it was found out that to the north, the afternoon temperature is around 35°C.
Similarly at the center of the settlement, the afternoon temperatures are
around 30°C. However, in agricultural areas and the natural environment, the
temperature was found to be 29°C (MGM,2021).

Although considered an advantage as it reduces urban temperature and
provides comfort, the settlements to the north are allowed to choose location
and there is a lack of outdoor and green circulation system while there is
intense construction, which prevents urban air corridors from forming (Map 7).
Torbalı is surrounded by
agricultural land, without any
developed industry in the
settlement area (Map 6). The
agricultural land is side by side
with industry, which makes
Torbalı suitable for agriculture
and growth. Development of
industry and fertile agricultural
soil as well as access to Torbalı
through İSBAN (İzmir suburban
train) line and investment in a
modern hospital exposed the
developing city to a 70%-increase
in population (Map 7).
