of the analytical evaluation, it will be useful to make an integrated synthesis
of Torbalı settlement in terms of spatial construction regulations and resilient
city criteria.
3. Results
The analyses were evaluated in terms of hydrogeology, land use,
transportation, social build up areas, and accessibility and pollution. In terms
of hydrogeology, the creek beds in Torbalı have dried up and got lost in
built environment. This formation leads to drought in the study area while it
poses a flood risk in times of irregular rain. The surfaces in Torbalı are largely
impermeable. The rain cannot seep into the ground, flows along the surface,
and poses a threat of serious life and property loss. The areas with a potential to
create a outdoor and green circulation system are identified as transportation
arteries, creek beds, water tunnels, urban forests and agricultural land.
In terms of land use, the physical strengths of the district are found to
be lands suitable for agriculture and their close distance to the city center.
However, this proximity to the city center creates a pressure on agricultural
land. The dust and emissions from the industrial area will stick to the soil and
plants, causing soil pollution, which constitutes another vulnerability.
When evaluated in terms of transportation, it was found out that there are
issues such as linking a 1 degree road to a 3rd degree road, and insufficient
st
access to education and health in the new settlement. The area has the İzmir-
Aydın-Denizli railway. İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport is situated 30-35 kms
away from the district, which is rich in agricultural land, and has an industrial
zone attracting investments, which can be considered the potentials of the
city (Map 13).
