The Paris Agreement Entered into Force in Turkey

The Paris Agreement, which aims to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees at
the end of this century, has entered into force.

After President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced at the United Nations (UN) General
Assembly that Turkey would become a party to the Paris Agreement, the agreement
was approved by the Turkish Grand National Assembly. The decision on the ratification
of the agreement was published in the Official Gazette on 7 October and Turkey’s appro-
val on the Paris Agreement was reported to the UN Secretariat on 11 October. Thus, as of
November 10, the 30th day after the approval was notified to the secretariat, the agree-
ment entered into force in Turkey and Turkey became the 192nd party to the agreement.

The entry into force of the Paris Agreement will create the
legal environment that will ensure regulation in policies and
THE GOAL OF laws in line with the goal of limiting the global temperature
LIMITING THE rise to 1.5 degrees, and Turkey will update its national cont-
GLOBAL ribution statements within this framework. Under the legally
TEMPERATURE RISE binding agreement, It is planned that the Turkey, which had
TO 1.5 DEGREES previously committed to reduce its emissions from a 21 per-
cent increase by 2030, as a first step,
will update its national contribution statements containing
emission reduction targets in the energy, waste, transportation, buildings and agricultu-
re sectors and submit it to the UN Secretariat.

Target Net Zero Emissions by 2050

With the Paris Agreement, which aims to reduce global emissions by at least 50 per-
cent by 2030, it is aimed to reach a net zero emission economy by 2050. In this context,
it is expected that countries will update their national contribution statements every 5
years regarding the steps they will take to reduce emissions.

THE GOA IS 50% In the 5th year of the Paris Agreement’s adoption, it is
REDUCTION OF estimated that emissions will increase by approximately 13
GLOBAL percent until 2030, according to the national contribution
EMISSIONS BY 2030 statements updated by some of the countries.
