2.2.4. TOBB and TEPAV Field Study
Interviews were conducted with businesses operating in the five provinces
and their affiliated districts which suffered from the most severe destruction
due to earthquakes. Between March 21-25, 2023, field studies were conducted
in the provinces and districts where the earthquake caused the most damage
and destruction with the participation of TOBB and TEPAV experts and with
the contributions of TOBB academic advisor and team already working in the
provinces in the earthquake zone.
Within the scope of the study, 283 business owners in a total of 22 districts
were interviewed face-to-face lasting about half an hour for each one. About
40 percent of the interviews were conducted in Hatay due to the large number
of affected districts, and the number of interviews were also ranged between
34-50 in other provinces. The main topics of the meetings held on a voluntary
basis and in a semi-structured format were the size and causes of the damage
suffered by enterprises due to the earthquake, the necessary conditions and
timing for them to start their activities again, support and prevention areas,
and priority order of these aspects. In addition to the enterprise owners, the
Chamber and Commodity Exchange managers of the relevant provinces and
districts were also contacted and their opinions were taken.
54 percent of the enterprises interviewed engage in activities the trade and
service sector. When the fields of activity of the companies participating in
the study are evaluated, it is seen that those which involved in the study by
the highest rate are wholesale and retail sector companies with a share of
31 percent, and this sector is followed by the service sector with 23 percent.
