Urban Growth - Climate Change
Figrue 2: Studies on climate change and urban growth
Figure 2 displays the focal points of studies on climate change and urban
growth. Agricultural land, water resources and ecosystem services can be
evaluated under the heading, natural environment, while land use policies can
be evaluated under the headings, urbanization and environment in relation
to migration. Furthermore, the heading, governance contains topics such as
resilience, vulnerability and risk management. Thus, as part of the study, the
emphasized parts will be discussed as the focal points most related to climate
change and urban growth.
When the focal points and the urban growth theories in literature are
examined in Figure 2, it will be noticed that there is special emphasis on
population growth and spatial distribution. (Agunbiade et al., 2012: 150; Yi et
al, 2016: 1192; Estrada et al, 2017: 404). The estimation that world population
will double in 2050 compared to 2010 (Haase et al, 2013: 11) is an indication that
the pace of urbanization is getting faster by each passing day. As cities contain
over half the world population, the built environment rapidly expands due
to economic activities, and cities become attractive as centers of innovation,
this brings about an increased pressure on natural environment and increased
demand on land and natural resources. (Scheuer et al, 2017: 4). These factors,
which account for rural to urban migration, raise the effects of climate change
due to the rapid consumption of natural resources. (Garcia et al, 2014: 227).
