Figure 1 shows details and stages of the study. The study, which is based on
literature review, is made up of indicators concerning urban growth dynamics
and climate change effects. In other words, growth dynamics are discussed
with their relation to climate change and the effects of climate change are
discussed with a focus on urban growth dynamics. As part of the study, first,
one of the effects of climate change on cities, urbanization and population
increase area discussed as anthropogenic factors, and the urban growth
dynamics concerning climate change are revealed. Next, the direct effects of
salient urban growth dynamics are investigated. With a two-stage literature
review, the global scale United Nations Development Program (UNDP),
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD),
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and The United Nations
Agency for Human Settlements (UN-Habitat) were examined in terms of
their approach to growth and climate change. Such international institutions
not only define the boundaries and forms of growth, but also run studies on
climate change. Thus, the study benefits from their spatial, economic, social
and environmental evaluations. In the second part of the Literature Review,
development approach based on urban growth and studies concerning
climate change are examined. As part of this study, which can be considered
an argumentative essay, relevant documents were examined. In the ensuing
evaluation on Türkiye, it was seen that it is not possible to draw conclusions
on urban growth policies regarding climate change. Thus, it was emphasized
that documents concerning policies on climate change effects and adaptation
should include more conclusions on urban growth and spatial planning. In this
respect, as the current study examined the present situation, it is expected to
shed light on practices related to the issue.
Literature Review – Urban Growth Dynamics and Their Effect on Climate Change
The current study aims to reveal the relationship between climate change
and urban growth dynamics on a national as well as an international level. To
this end, the study implements a two-stage literature review utilizing SCOPUS,
Turkish National Thesis Center (UTM) and Google Scholar data bases. In the
first stage of the literature review, a search was made on SCOPUS data base
using the keywords, “climate change” and “urban growth”. In the search,
each study abstracts were expected to contain the keywords at least five times
in their abstract. As a result, a total of 368 studies were found. The issues of
focus were visualized using Vos-viewer program (Figure 2).
