Türkiye Towards the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification Cop16

• Developing policies to reduce the impact and occurrence of sand and
dust storms by early warning, risk assessment and reducing human-
driven causes,
• Ensuring greater synergies among three Rio Conventions including the
complementarities in the implementation of these convention through
nature-based solutions and goal-setting at the national level, and
• Fostering the participation of non-governmental organizations and
young people in the work and meetings of the UNCCD.
UNCCD COP 15 highlighted the need for UNCCD to step out of the
shadow of the UNFCCC and the CBD and make itself a fundamental part
of solving the land, food, climate and biodiversity crises that are linked with
each other. Since UNCCD COP 15 was the first of the Conference of the
Parties of three Rio Conventions planned for 2022, it set the threshold and
launched the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Other significant issues
are the introduction of a text aimed at strengthening relations with other
relevant conventions. COP15 marked as the first event in which the concept of
“Nature-Based Solutions” was mentioned for the first time in a Rio Convention
(UNCCD) COP resolution. The concept of “Nature-Based Solutions” served
as a model for the CBD COP held in the same year (UNCCD, 2024).

5. Towards UNCCD COP16

5.1. COP16 Agenda

Meetings will be held in the following topics in the framework of the COP16
agenda, which will be realised under the main theme “Our Land, Our Future”.
COP16 Agenda is given in the Table 3 below.
