The Effects of the 6 February Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes
on the Business World
are higher. When specifically examined on the basis of provinces, the share
of tradesmen and farmers outside Diyarbakır and Elazığ is higher than the
average of Türkiye, while the share of public employees is also the same
in all provinces except Gaziantep. While high tradesman-farmer ratios are
remarkable in Hatay and Sanliurfa, the share of public employees stands out
with 20 percent levels in Diyarbakır and Elazığ.

Insured employee statistics for January 2023 contain important information
about the loss of labor in the earthquake zone. January 2023 data regarding
the insured employees was declared by SGK on March 31, 2023. While
relevant statistics are based on the notifications made until February 26, 2023,
the force majeure was declared for the provinces in the earthquake zone,
thus all kinds of data, documents and statements that should be provided
between 6 February and 30 April were postponed until May 26, 2023. Bearing
in mind that the April data which will be published by the end of June after the
completion of postponement date will contain more precise information, it is
believed that the insured employee statistics for January include important
information about the current labor force loss due to destruction, damage
and migration in the earthquake zone.
As of January, the decreases in the number of employees in the 11 provinces
located in the earthquake zone were 465,695 (26.8 percent) annually and
614,272 (32.5 percent) monthly. Based on monthly changes, Kahramanmaraş
and Hatay are among the leading two provinces where employment was
constricted at the highest level, respectively with the loss of 121,321 (69.6
percent) employees and the loss of 127,289 (61.2 percent) employees. They
are followed by Gaziantep with 121.183 (31.6 percent), Malatya with 61.403
