DEVELOPMENT OF DESERTIFICATION MAPS

                    AND VULNERABILITY MODEL, TÜRKİYE

                                   Zehra KAVAKLI KARATAŞ

                                          ABSTRACT
Desertification has become an increasingly critical problem worldwide and in Türkiye due to the
negative effects of climate change and human activities. There are extensive studies on this topic in
the literature, and especially rapid and irregular population growth and uncontrolled invasive of
settlement areas accelerate land degradation and desertification processes. In this review article, works
on desertification has conducted both worldwide and Türkiye will be examined in detail. In particular,
the Turkish Desertification Model and Susceptibility Map, developed in cooperation with the General
Directorate of Combating Desertification and Erosion and TÜBİTAK in Türkiye, is great importance of
the first comprehensive study conducted in this field in Türkiye Furthermore, small scale desertification
works have been carried out in various regions in Türkiye as well. In light of continuous advances in
science and technology, works on desertification carry on rapidly both in Türkiye and around the world,
and various new methodologies have been developed in this direction.
