SETTLEMENT MODEL FROM LOWLANDS TO
MOUNTAINS MAY PREVENT CARBON DIOXIDE
TOXICITY
Fatih KARA
ABSTRACT
Because the molecular weight of carbon dioxide (CO2) is greater than the weight of the main
molecules in the air, CO2 tends to settle and accumulate on the ground. Large amounts of
CO2 emitted in cities, especially from fossil fuels, accumulate above cities, creating a CO2-rich
layer (i.e. an urban CO2 dome). High levels of CO2 in the air we breathe are a serious public
health concern. On the other hand, CO2 is an essential molecule for plant photosynthesis and
supports plant growth. The “settlement model from lowlands to mountains”, which is based
on the principle of using lowlands for agriculture and solid rocky ground for settlement, and
which came to the fore after the recent earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş, is a project aimed at
reducing earthquake-related risks. But it can also have beneficial effects on human health and
agricultural productivity, as the city’s CO2 load will move from the hills to the plains. In this
article, the opinion that the CO2 flow from the people who will live on the hills to the plants that
will grow on the lowlands may be very beneficial for both groups has been tried to be grounded
and detailed based on scientific studies.
