               FOR SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

                                     Ayça DOĞANER

                                        ABSTRACT
The issue of development is very important in economic policies. Development, which is generally
expressed as developments in economic, social, cultural and political fields, has been expressed in
different perspectives according to various understandings in the historical process. Today, when it
comes to economic development, the sustainable development model comes into prominence. In the
understanding of sustainable development, in addition to the economic, social and political fields,
the environment is also included in the process with a holistic evaluation. In this context, there are
various goals to make cities and people more resilient, safe, inclusive and to create sustainable cities
and communities. While realizing these goals, the current adversities must be taken into account.
Natural disasters are the most frequently spoken natural disasters in the world, especially in recent
years. The increasing frequency of natural disasters and the fact that the damage they cause affects not
only that region but also other regions causes the damage to increase even more. In addition to the loss
of millions of people's lives in natural disasters, the negative effects of the lives of those left behind, the
costs of investments made to compensate for the damage are increasing day by day. For this reason,
the issue of protecting cities from natural disasters should be at the forefront, and physical, social,
historical-cultural and economic damages of disasters should be reduced and, if possible, eliminated.
It is very important to create resilient cities so that the economic, social, cultural and environmental
gains of cities throughout history are not lost due to sudden changes or unexpected deterioration.
As a result of the study, it has been concluded that making the cities of countries with high natural
disaster risk, such as Türkiye, to be resilient, as a reason for social and economic development, and that
it is necessary to increase their efforts to manage, identify and prevent risks.
