NATURE BASED SOLUTIONS AND
                                 URBAN RESILIENCE

                                        ABSTRACT
           The Earth is facing an unprecedented climate and biological diversity crisis. The effects of climate
           change and environmental degradation are felt strongly in cities. Heat waves, drought, fire, coastal
           flooding, urban floods, and natural disasters threaten the existence of vulnerable urban systems
           and cause ecological, economic and social problems in cities. Considering that these problems will
           increase gradually, there is a need for safe, inclusive, resilient and sustainable cities that can easily
           overcome the shocks and stresses that may arise for different reasons. It is imperative to experience
           a green transformation that enables cities to increase their resilience and sustainable development.
           In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the relationship between urban resilience and nature-based
           solutions. The benefits of nature-based solutions to ecological, social and economic systems
           (ecosystem services) and their contribution to increasing the resilience of urban systems against
           climate hazards and creating sustainable cities and settlements are emphasized. The contribution
           of nature-based solutions to urban resilience at the basin, city and micro catchment scales has been
           evaluated. It was emphasized that all urban systems depend on the natural resources (the natural
           capital), and that healthy and well-functioning ecosystems increase the resilience of cities against
           extreme weather events and disasters. It was concluded that by adopting the understanding of using
           nature as a solution by recognizing the vital importance of ecosystem services, investing in nature
           in cities will strengthen urban systems and societies, livable and equitable cities can be created, and
           whether these solutions can be realized in a limited time frame will determine the fate of cities.
