Türkiye Towards the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification Cop16

The task of the working group in the second stage was to prepare a one-
page speech text based on the above five core opinions. In the process of
preparing the texts of other country opinions and speeches related to COP16,
the working stages expressed in Table 4 were also followed.
In addition to the above five interactive dialogue topics, if it is to draw
the general framework of the other negotiation topics at COP16, it can be
said that it is aimed at UNCCD, Sustainable Land Management (SLM) and
the protection of ecosystems by promoting international cooperation. The
UNCCD COP16 to be held in Saudi Arabia also serves this purpose and
COP16 is expected to be a milestone in the combat against desertification,
land degradation and drought (DLDD). Türkiye’s efforts on the issue of DLDD
so far, and especially at the national and regional levels since 2015, will make
significant contributions to the COP16 goals.
In achieving the goal of land degradation neutrality (LDN), Türkiye’s SLM
practices have a vital role. It is considered that Türkiye, which is one of the
first two countries in the world to develop the LDN Decision Support System
(DSS) , will develop SLM applications both qualitatively and quantitatively

through LDN DSS. On the other hand, after the UNCCD COP 12 held in
Türkiye in 2015, Türkiye has carried out pioneering studies such as the “Ankara
Initiative” and “Target Setting Programs”.
Türkiye will be able to make significant contributions with its efforts and
experiences to UNCCD COP16 to be held in Saudi Arabia which is expected
to be a “milestone” and at the same time, it will ensure that Türkiye’s role of
being a “pioneer country” in its region will continue.
