Perception and Expectations of Urban
Regeneration in Istanbul
2.2. Characteristics of the participants
The characteristics of the participants interviewed in the survey show
similarities in all three periods (Table 1). According to the information stated in
the address-based census system during the periods when the research was
conducted (TUIK, 2013; TUIK 2019), about 44-45% of the population living in
İstanbul was born in İstanbul. Except for the deviation in the 2019 survey, it is
seen that the people interviewed within the scope of the surveys were born
in İstanbul at a similar rate. About 40-46% of the participants were graduated
from primary and secondary schools (primary education). The proportion of
high school graduates is between 32-37%. The proportion of those who have
a associate, university or master’s degree is close to 20%. Around 50% of the
people interviewed are full-time employees. In the evaluation according to the
employment status, it is seen that a quarter of the participants are housewives.
While pensioners were at the level of 18% in the 2013 survey, they are at the
rate of 9% in the 2019 surveys. Since the survey questions were conducted
with people who were the one or among the decision-makers regarding the
household, it should be noted that the students who were interviewed came
to İstanbul for the purpose of studying and received financial support from
their families. Approximately more than 60% of the participants described their
income status as quite good and very good. In the case of home ownership, it
is seen that more than half of the participants own the house they live in.
