General Properties and Seismic Performance of High Risk Buildings in
                                          Our Country

Besides the typical structural damage described above, the most common
type of damage in almost any earthquake is infill wall damage. It has,
unfortunately, become a standard practice in our country to build the infill
walls adjacently without leaving any gaps or flexible material in the frame. It
is inevitable that the filling walls made with brittle material are not as flexible
as the frame and crack at much lower drift levels compared to the frame.
Infill wall damages are usually observed in the form of separation from the
frame at low drift levels and cross cracks and out-of-plane overturning at high
drift levels, and such damages are much more explicit in the flexible buildings
(Figure 6). The infill wall damages in the buildings which have no or small
amount of structural damage make people psychologically uncomfortable
causing them not to enter their buildings.
