In addition to soft storey, significant damages are observed in the buildings
having torsional irregularity, short columns and heavy overhangs, together
with the impacts of other inadequacies. Damage caused by the short
columns are commonly encountered in our country, it occurs as a result of
not considering the short column effect in the design (Figure 4a). Overhangs
are usually constructed in the RC buildings in our country in order to comply
with the zoning and to gain space on the upper floors. If these overhangs are
taken into account in the design and detailed accordingly, they would not
create such negative effects in terms of structural behaviour. However, in our
country, heavy overhangs cause damage since they are not considered in the
calculations accurately and lead to the distortion of frame continuity (Figure
4b). In the buildings with torsional irregularities, the elements on the outer
