Although Montreal can be seen as a city where private vehicle usage is
higher compared to cycling cities such as Copenhagen, it is an important
cycling city with an infrastructure of about 650 km of cycling routes. The Bixi
bicycle sharing system in the city also makes an important contribution to
the use of bicycles as a means of transportation. One of the main factors in
the adoption of bicycle culture in the city is the protests made by bicycle
activists in the 1970s and, along with this, it triggered the local government
to make policies on cycling infrastructure (Walker, 2015). Figure 7 shows the
distribution of cycling routes in Montreal.
