Evaluation Of Vulnerability On Turkish Coastal Provinces With Gis
Figure 5: The study of the economic vulnerability levels of
coastal cities in Türkiye (Created by the writers)
The main issues in Adana and Hatay, which appear to have high levels
social vulnerability, are high percentage of child population, high levels of
unemployment, and the increased population density. Other reasons why
Istanbul, which has the highest population and population density, turned
out to have a high social vulnerability include increased unemployment and
the high percentage of child population. In addition to these problems in
Istanbul, the social vulnerability of certain disadvantaged groups due to
urban population density and spatial distribution is increasing each passing
day (www.ibb.istanbul, Erişim tarihi: 15.05.2022). The reasons for the high
levels of vulnerability in Ordu and Giresun are the high percentage of elderly
population, and the low level of socio-economic development (Figure 6).
The reasons why the cities of Çanakkale, Balıkesir and Trakya have low
levels of social vulnerability despite the high percentage of elderly population
are the low population density compared to other coastal cities can be given
as low population density, and high socio-economic development levels
compared to other coastal cities. The low levels of social vulnerability in
Bartın, Kastamonu and Sinop results from low unemployment rates compared
to the ones in other coastal cities. In Muğla, the socio-economic development
seems really high, which has an positive impact on the vulnerability of the city
(Figure 6).
