The Effect of Climate Change on Tourism

An alternative tourism type, cave tourism, stands out in eco-tourism,
appealing more to nature and culture lover tourists (Külekçi and Sezen, 2018:
66). Tableland tourism is preferred by tourists who get bothered by the heat
and choose to relax in clean air in nature (İTO, 1997). Another tourism type
that is preferred by adventurous people throughout the year, especially
in winter months, as opposed to sea tourism in summer months, is the
“mountaineering and winter tourism” (Köşker and Unur, 2014: 767). “Religious
tourism” is defined as touristic visits for people to fulfil their religious duties,
pray, travel and learn more about their religions (Eykay et al, 2015).
Culture tourism is defined by UNWTO as the travels of individuals to different
destinations to satisfy their needs for historical and cultural knowledge, and
this tourism type is said to provide self-development in addition to broadening
horizons (Çulha, 2008). Further, during their travels, tourists who participate in
touristic activities develop an interest in the culture and cuisine of the host
countries. (Chang et al, 2011; Hashimoto and Telfer, 2006; Kivela and Crotts,
2005; Rand and Health, 2006). Also called “gastronomy tourism”, these
recently popular activities allow the tourists to taste the local dishes and to
improve their palate, also contributing to the development of world cuisine.
(Johns and Clarke, 2001; Johns and Kivela, 2001). This is one of the leading
factors that increases the potential of tourism destinations to attract tourists.
(Altunsaban et al, 2016; Aydoğdu and Duman, 2017; Bessiere, 1998; Choe and
Kim, 2019; Cohen and Avieli, 2004; Hacıoğlu et al, 2009a; Henderson, 2004).
With the natural, cultural, historical and religious riches as well as climate
conditions that allow a variety of tourism types to emerge, Türkiye is known
as an important tourist destination. Considering the tourism types defined
above, tourism sector is a great source of economic income for Türkiye. Table
1, based on the statistical data presented by Turkish Ministry of Culture and
Tourism, shows the share of tourism in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and
the increase in tourism income over the years
