Although tourism sector has reached to a positively important level in
terms of economy, starting from the 21 century, the United Nations (UN)
st
emphasized that climate change will have important consequences that will
affect this sector. The Working Group II Report in the Sixth Report issued by
the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2022 emphasized
this issue, increased climate change and the resulting extreme weather
conditions and disasters will continue to affect all economic sectors, including
tourism (IPCC, 2022).
However, tourism does not have a one-way relationship with climate
change. In fact, tourism sector itself is one of the important factors that
lead to greenhouse gas emissions resulting in climate change. Therefore,
for assessment of activities that lead to changes in climate, mitigation of
greenhouse gases and maintenance of resilience in the sector and the
necessary measures towards adaptation for the emerging effects of climate
are essential for the sustainability of the sector.
Thus, the aim of this study is to make a literature review on tourism sector
and climate change, and to discuss the findings. The study first examines
the fundamental concepts concerning tourism and climate change as well as
tourism types and the concept of climate change. Secondly, it reviews the
