The Contribution Of Reuse Of Historical Buildings
For The Urban Resilience: The Case Of Manisa Kurşunlu Han
badly by the additions made. This is an important indicator of the need for
attention to functional changes in historical buildings. In fact, adaptive reuse
should not be considered as simply attributing a new function to it. Instead,
the structure should be analyzed to preserve its originality. Furthermore,
environmental, social and economic costs should be taken into account. In
this sense, reuse of historical buildings through adaptive reuse should be
considered as a contribution to the economic component of sustainable
development, and as self-financing, effective method to preserve buildings
(Othman, A.A.E., Elsaay,H., 2018: 1707).
Bullen and Love (2011) states that while deciding on adaptive reuse of
historical buildings, the following elements should be considered:
• The cultural and historical importance of the structure.
• The life cycle assessment of the structure.
• The capacity of the structure to meet sustainable development
criteria.
• The economic sustainability of the structure.
• Social sustainability of the structure.
• The contribution of reusing a structure to local economy.
• The capacity of the structure to adapt to its adaptive reuse.
• The views of all shareholders concerning the adaptive reuse of the
historical building.
In the light of the information given above, there have been a lot of issues
in the decision making process for the adaptive reuse of Kurşunlu Han.
1. The most important issue is whether the adaptive reuse of the Han
is economically sustainable or not.
2. When social sustainability capacity was investigated, whether the
adaptive reuse of the structure will contribute to the local life or not
was not anticipated.
3. The adaptation of Kurşunlu Han and the urban protection area where
it is located after the adaptive reuse is really important. The structure
must be turned into an indispensable part of the environment.
4. In social and economic areas, starting from the central and local
government, all shareholders must develop strategies and resources.
6. Kurşunlu Han (2016-2018) Restoration Process
