The Contribution Of Reuse Of Historical Buildings
For The Urban Resilience: The Case Of Manisa Kurşunlu Han
social, economic and political disruptions and confusions, which resuites the
development of resilience. In this respect, the adaptive reuse of our historical
buildings to render our cities more resilient will contribute greatly to social,
economic, historical, cultural, and environmental resilience (Gülhan, 2022).
As also mentioned in Part 4, adaptive reuse of historical buildings is
relatively inexpensive compared to the costs of building new structures.
Therefore, the decision to reuse can be taken based on economic reasons.
Instead of rebuilding current structures, refunctionalizing them will save
energy, labor, material and funding (Engin, 2009: 24). The adaptive reuse of
historical buildings helps save already scare resources, and maintains the
balance between production and consumption. Instead of the resources
such as high-cost land, the material used to build a new structure, and labor
force, developing resources to restore the existing building stock must be the
priority of resilient city agendas.
In all cities, the current building stock should be identified, especially the
buildings which have withstood environmental disasters must be detected
and the decision should be made on how to relate this building stock to the
different functions needed by the city (such as hospital, school, dormitory,
residence, etc.)
Architectural spaces, the structural indicators of living spaces, are also the
expression of the ongoing cultural richness of the society they serve (Engin
2009: 23). Be it designed for worship, work, education or entertainment, these
historical structures have a past that depends completely on social memory.
For historical sustainability, and a healthy level of historical awareness in
people and the society, historical structures should be preserved and passed
on to future generation (Yaldız, 2003: 26).
An individual living in an environment with traces of the past will instinctually
and cognitively experience the sustainability of cultural heritage and have
historical consciousness. Thus, a cultural society experiencing the historical
structures and building strong ties with their past will be created.
