The Role of Carbon Technologies in the
                                        "Net Zero" Target
What is CCUS? How does it Contribute to the “Net Zero“ Target?

The Intergovernmental Climate Change Panel (IPCC) Report on “1.5°C
Global Warming” presents four scenarios which require CO2 removal to limit
the global temperature increase to 1,5°C. Three of these scenarios involve
using Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies (see Figure 2). The
scenario without CCS, on the other hand, involves the most radical changes
in human behavior (IPCC, 2018). Additionally, according to a joint report
prepared by Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development
(OECD) and International Energy Agency (IEA), CCUS practices are expected
to provide the second significant contribution to mitigate greenhouse gas
emissions after energy efficiency improvements (OECD/IEA, 2016; Philibert
& C, 2007). Moreover, in the IEA 2020 energy technology perspectives report,
there is an emphasis on the central role of that CCUS as one of the four
keystones of “electrification with renewables”, bioenergy and hydrogen as
            well as global energy transitions.
