ABSTRACT
Flood events in our country have been increasing since the mid-1990s. The Eastern Black Sea Basin is one
of the regions most affected by floods and inundations due to its topographical and hydrometeorological
characteristics. On September 20, 2024, convective heavy rainfall over a short period was the main cause of
the flood that occurred in Araklı and its surrounding areas (164 kg/m² of rainfall was recorded in 4 hours).
In this study, the heavy rain that took place on the specified date and time interval (12:00–15:00 GMT) was
meteorologically analyzed. The investigation utilized products from the Numerical Weather Prediction
(NWP) run by the Numerical Weather Prediction Division of the Turkish State Meteorological Service
(TSMS), including ECMWF, AROME, ALARO, EFI, EPS, and WRF models, Skew-T log-P diagrams,
outputs of instability indices (such as K Index and TT Index), developed under the NWC SAF context
Convective Rainfall Rate (CRR), Rapidly Developing Thunderstorms (RDT), and Cloud Top Tempera-
ture and Height (CTTH)) satellite products and Trabzon Meteorology Radar images. The meteorological
causes of the flood event in Trabzon-Araklı were analyzed and interpreted using these materials. It was
observed that the system, continuously fed by the sea, facilitated the initiation of convective activity due
to surface-level warming and cooling in the upper levels, leading to the formation and intensification of
rainfall. The system showed no horizontal movement, remaining stationary and delivering rainfall over
nearly the same area throughout the event.
