259 Caves Under Protection
Currently, there are 259 caves protected under different statuses
in our country. All of these caves and newly discovered caves are
being investigated ecologically and geologically, and studies
are being carried out to identify and register conservation areas.
Their Presence is Vital to Our World.
Due to their structure, caves contain many different ecosystems
and host quite different and sensitive creatures adapted to these
ecosystems. For this reason, caves are of vital importance for
the preservation of the balance of nature and the sustainability
of biological diversity thanks to the bats they host.
New Invertebrate Animal Species Discovered
In the last 3 years, ecological and geological research were
carried out in 104 caves by the Ministry of Environment,
Urbanization and Climate Change. In the research carried out,
new species of invertebrate animals were introduced to the
world of science. In some caves, species such as otters, which
play a key role in the ecosystem, were found to live. More than 1
million TL was used by the Ministry for this research.
Sea Caves Under the Spotlight
This year, for the first time in our country, the ecological and
geological research of the sea caves will be started, and a 3D
survey (LIDAR) study will be carried out in the land caves. Within
the scope of the reports prepared as a result of the research, the
registration of these caves and their protection are continuing.
Türkiye’s underground treasures are protected in safe hands
and carried into the future.
