Resilient Cities From Geodesign Perspective:
The Case of Şanlıurfa Province
most important stream beds in the region, hundreds of buildings need to be
removed in this location (Figure 7. and 8.). These findings are based on the
non-negligible sound scientific analyses. The main question is what should be
done only if these findings are taken seriously. Technical options such as the
destruction of flood-affected houses or completely demolishing Bahçelievler,
the most damaged district of Sanliurfa in the February 6, 2023 earthquake
(Figure 9.) and replacing them with larger and planned infrastructure systems,
or reinforcing the buildings with stronger soil fastenings, should be discussed
during Geodesign’s negotiation phase with the participation of all stakeholders.
In addition, comprehensive and long-term financial analysis should be part of
this stage. Because not everything that is technically possible is available at
the same time. Since the recent floods in Sanliurfa have shown that canals that
are not properly maintained can turn into deadly traps, the need for a long-
term financial analysis is also obvious.
