• For the protection of art objects such as sculptures and high-
tech devices Floor Isolation Platforms were developed and their
reliability in protecting critical equipment from earthquake effects was
demonstrated by Alhan and Gavin (2005). An example of such platforms
from the recent period has been presented by Sorace et al. (2016).
• A numerical research study was conducted by Colombo and
Almazan (2017) on earthquake reinforcement by seismic isolation
of Liquid Storage Tanks and they revealed that the probability of
collapse was reduced by 90% as a result of this application.
• A comprehensive literature review was presented by Whittaker et
al. (2018) for Nuclear Power Plants with Seismic Isolation. It was
reported that there are a total of 6 seismic isolation nuclear power
plants operating in the world, four of them in France and two in
South Africa, and all of them have rubber isolators built in the 1970s.
• Light Steel Frame structures are among another type of structure
where the application of seismic isolation is not common. Although
there is a small risk of collapse that will not pose a serious risk on life
safety, these structures can take the advantage of seismic isolation,
since large relative floor displacements and damage due to inelastic
behavior are observed even in low-medium level earthquakes
(Jampole et al., 2020).
• In the very recent period, a special seismic isolation systems based
on the principle of curved surface friction isolators have been
developed for Steel Storage Racks , and it has been numerically
and experimentally shown that the accelerations on the shelf floors
are reduced (Tagliafierro et al., 2021).
• The most striking examples of seismic isolation applications on silos
and industrial facilities are the seismic isolation silo group (Figure 6)
and seismic isolation main production building (Figure 7) in Ferrero
Hazelnut Production Facilities built in Düzce. The silo group consists
of 12 high hazelnut silos of 28.5 m on a common base and a seismic
isolation system consisting of lead-core insulators and viscous
dampers, which are the first examples of this type worldwide. The
Main Production Building is a special building with friction pendulum
isolators and is the first example of an industrial structure with seismic
isolation in Türkiye. The analysis and design details of these structures,
which were designed by Gahafari Associates LLC, were provided by
Hacıemiroğlu et al. (2021a, 2021b).
