Seismic Isolation in Earthquake -
Resistant Structural Design for Resilient Cities

a good earthquake performance including the ones exposed to major
earthquakes (Martelli et al. 2014). Seismic isolation is mostly applied in the
hospital buildings. According to the circular of the Ministry of Health of
Republic of Türkiye issued in 2013 and updated in 2018, hospitals with a certain
bed capacity located in earthquake zones in Türkiye should be designed
and built with seismic isolation. In this context, many hospital buildings with
seismic isolation have been built in Türkiye in the last decade, and Adana City
Hospital (Figure 2), Isparta City Hospital and İstanbul Çam and Sakura City
Hospital from Türkiye are among the 10 largest seismic isolation buildings
in the world (Figure 3) (ENR, 2023) Adana City Hospital was designed by
Ülker Engineering and built with 1512 seismic isolators (Figure 2). Isparta City
Hospital has 903 friction pendulum isolators and the structural design was
carried out by Probi Construction. The largest hospital building with seismic
isolation in the world is the Çam and Sakura City Hospital (Figure 3) with a
total of 2068 insulators, which was built in 2020 and is located in Başakşehir,
İstanbul (Arup, 2023). The hospital building composed of 7 buildings with
a total capacity of 1768 beds located at İstanbul University Hasdal Campus
was designed by Sigma Engineering using friction pendulum (curved surface)
seismic isolators. Photos of the project which is still under construction, are
            presented in Figure 4.
