The Importance Of Ecolabels in Sustainable Production and Consumption:
Turkish Environmental Labelling System
To gather all the data provided, and to create a data set that reflects the
average or typical conditions of our country,
To create these data sets separately for each sub-product group considered
in each product group,
To perform LCA studies for each sub-product group by using these data,
To make comparisons between the criteria and the threshold values set for
these criteria in international applications such as EU EcoLabel, Germany -
Blue Angel, Nordic Countries - Nordic Swan Eco-label while establishing the
labelling criteria,
To share the draft criteria created in this regard with the sector and to
receive their opinions and suggestions,
To establish draft criteria by considering these opinions and suggestions.
As can be seen in Figure 1 which summarizes the process, the first stage is
the development of candidate criteria for the target product/service group.
For this purpose, a detailed survey study is conducted for collecting data for
the target product or service, and criteria determined for the target product/
service group in other countries are compiled. At this point, the European
Ecolabel system is primarily examined, and differences and similarities with
other ecolabel criteria are evaluated in detail. The European Ecolabel, Nordic
Swan, and Blue Angel systems are the most widely used systems during the
development of the criteria published by the Ministry.

Figure 1. Criterion Development Process
The second stage in criterion development is the collection of product/
service data from relevant stakeholders. As an example, in the development
of glass product criteria, 225 companies operating in the glass sector
were contacted and detailed information about product categories and
product compositions was collected from 11 companies and the data was
consolidated. The information collected through surveys is used not only to
generate information about the average product composition but also to
create inventory data that will be used in LCA analyses. The main purpose
of collecting information about products/ services is to obtain representative
information about products in the Turkish market.
