Sustainability in The Era of Türkiye
In the following period, the preparations for other sectors were accelerated,
and many activities intended for informing were performed, and also industrial
facilities were examined on-site and their adaptation capacities were considered.
For the purpose of ensuring the spread of clean and innovative production
techniques within the scope of the zero pollution approach in the industrial
sector, which has gained a different dimension with the European Green Deal,
the practice of green transformation certificate has been developed in the
industry and it has been announced that it will be put into operation soon
(Directorate General of Environmental Management, 2022; Directorate for EU
Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye 2022; The Union of
Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Türkiye (TOBB)).
Moreover, in order to increase the competitiveness in the industry and
to minimize the pollution elements through the effective management of
resources, the Ministry of Industry and Technology launched the green OIZ
certification process in cooperation with the World Bank in 2016, and the
way the transformation of OIZs into an environmentally-friendly structure was
paved.
Also, with the regulation implemented in 2011 on the effective management
of air pollutants originating from industry, a database on flue gas continuous
emission measurement systems (CEMS) was developed with a view to providing
centralized management of emissions, and hence the follow-up procedure
was strengthened by monitoring online the possibility of exceeding the limit
values determined by the relevant legislation. The limit values on pollutants
have also been reduced over time and brought finally to the level of the values
stipulated in the EU norms. An MRV (monitoring-reporting-verification) system
was developed for the regular monitoring of greenhouse gases, in addition to
air pollutant emissions, which cause climate change, and hence two-thirds of
greenhouse gas emissions from industry could be monitored.
Transformation in Transportation
One of the areas affecting both climate change and air quality is
transportation. Although less emissions occur thanks to the constantly
developing vehicle and engine technologies, this decrease is not visible due
to an increase in the number of vehicles.
In this respect, the efforts on the transition to electrification in transportation
in the world are also closely followed by Türkiye, and the activities for the
transition of logistics and agricultural vehicles to electric as well as domestic
passenger cars such as TOGG are going on rapidly. Additionally, the
widespread use of environmentally friendly cycling has been supported,
and therefore, the Turkish cycle route network master plan (Directorate
