Sustainability in The Era of Türkiye
COAL TO CLEAN, 2022), that was issued by Ember, the UK-based think tank, on
May 24, 2022, has the finding that solar and wind energy investments in Türkiye
prevent an annual fossil fuel import of 7 billion Dollars, which demonstrates the
success of Türkiye in this respect.
This transformation has created new job opportunities and made positive
contributions to employment. According to the “Renewable Energy and
Jobs - Annual Review 2022” Report (IRENA, 2022) issued by the International
Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), more than 110 thousand jobs have already
been created in the renewable energy manufacturing sector in Türkiye. The
report states that around one-fourth of these jobs are in the wind sector, and
one-fifth of them are in the sun sector, both of which are the energy production
sectors of the future, and that the rate of female employees is 32%, which
exceeds the female employment rate of 21% in the fossil fuel sector.
Also, according to the report, “Renewables 2022: Analysis and Forecast to
2027” (IEA, 2022) published by the International Energy Agency on December
6, 2022, in the next 5 years, in the light of the current investments and policies
in Türkiye, the installed power capacity of renewable energy is estimated to
reach around 90 GW with an increase of 64%, and the solar and wind energy,
having the largest share, will account for 75% of it. It is also emphasized that
after this growth, Türkiye is expected to be one of the top 10 in the world in
terms of installed power of renewable energy.
Energy Density-Efficiency
Using energy efficiently and effectively is as important as producing it. One
of the significant indicators in this respect is energy density, a parameter that
represents the energy needed to produce one unit of gross domestic product
(GDP). According to the data obtained from the Ministry of Energy and Natural
Resources, the energy density of Türkiye has decreased (recovered) by a
quarter in the last 20 years (Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of the
Republic of Türkiye, 2022).
Likewise, the report, “Energy Efficiency 2022” issued by the International
Energy Agency stated that Türkiye became the second best country in the
world in terms of improving energy density among G20 countries in 2021 (IEA,
2022). This situation demonstrates the success of the efficiency efforts paid
and the development of technologies consuming less energy in production, as
well as the preference for new and energy-efficient technologies by consumers
depending on the improvement of purchasing power and environmental
sensitivity.
