Nature Based Solutions And Urban Resilience
an element of nature-based of adaptation activities at different scales in all
sectors. Developing nature-based solutions for urban systems such as energy,
waste-management, industry, infrastructure, and housing will also decrease
external dependence of the cities.
For this reason, nature and natural ecosystems are our biggest supporter in
the fight against climate crisis. Changing the perspective on nature, adopting
an approach that considers nature not as a source to consume, but as an
entity that lives with biodiversity and needs to be worked with will increase the
chances of success for the process of adaptation to climate crisis.
It is possible to protect nature and economy simultaneously. Nature-based
solutions are compatible with zero carbon goal. In order to reach zero carbon
goal in cities, there is need for developing adaptation emission mitigating
adaptation precautions as well as solutions towards increasing the carbon
amount captured by natural ecosystems. It is highly important to balance the
amounts of carbon released to the atmosphere and captured carbon, and
take the amount of captured carbon to a gradually-increasing levels. To reach
Sustainable Development Goals and zero carbon goal, there needs to be
investment on nature, which will improve the relationship between cities and
nature. To reach the goal of equitable, resilient cities that adapt to nature,
depend on circular economy, and have low emissions, there is need for a
transformation from grey cities to green cities.
Results
Crises trigger change and development. Climate crisis has revealed that as
in many sectors around the world, there needs to be change in the cities as
well. It was emphasized in COP 2022 that Paris Agreement is an achievable
goal but to do so, serious measures should be taken without delay.
During this process, cities and communities that try to adapt to change
rather than resisting it will be harmed by climate crisis at a minimum level.
Climate change can be considered as an opportunity to develop by healing
and preserving nature. Ecological systems make up natural capital. To
increase the resilience of ecosystems, there is need for investment in natural
capital. The restrictions due to Covid 19 global pandemic have shown that
when the pressure on nature decreases, a great part of nature enters a rapid
development process. Cities can also recover along with nature.
Cities are areas that constantly change and improve, and they offer various
opportunities for climate adaptation actions to be developed with a safer,
equitable approach that leaves no one behind (Tuğaç, 2022). The creation of
urban resilience involves the management of uncertainties, threats and risks
