Climate Change And Türkiye
Combined with the climate change, its effects should not be underestimated.
Today, with the contribution of climate change, use of water by society (as
drinking water, wash water and for irrigation) has become very common; thus,
it is becoming increasingly important to protect water resources, use them
economically in a well manageable manner.. Not just because of climate
change, but also due to migrations and increase in population, there is great
uncertainty regarding future demands on water. In spite of that, it seems likely
that the problems with demand on all sectors will grow exponentially in the
future. Water resources may become a limited factor on the development
processes of certain countries. During the process, the world will become
a place, where there will be an increase in the conflicting water demands
and the issue concerning water resource management, which will become
increasingly important and complicated. The main objective of water resource
management is to maximize the long-term economic and social benefits of
freshwater resources and to attach importance to ecosystem processes and
the preservation of biodiversity.
When local water resources (above and below the surface) falls short
of meeting the increasing human needs, the accumulation of water in the
wetlands and its transport to residential areas will gain importance. For this
purpose, building embankments, water connections, surface and underground
dams, water abstraction and transportation from these resources through
pumps, wells, pipes, canals and water trucks will become important. Before
all these activities, it has been observed that there are some inefficiencies
and insufficiencies in water preservation due to global warming and climate
change at the beginning of the 21st century.
The already limited water resources and useful and cultivable land
degradiation will lead to increased climate change, which in turn results from
the increase in big construction projects covering large areas, the decrease
in woodlands and arable land, pollution of troposphere, the bottom most
layer of our atmosphere because of the fossil fuel consumption. Recently,
many responsible individuals and institutions around the world have made
great efforts to stop this trend and keep it under control. The Ministry of
Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change is the leading ministry in our
country which sensitively concerned about the issue.
Throughout human civilizations, taking control of nearby water resources
and using them for families and the society with social justice has been one of
the most important issues. In the midst of water-related problems, people are
known to search for solutions to protect themselves from floods and minimize
the effects of droughts. For instance, the first water engineering structures
were trenches and berms made to prevent flooding of arable land.
