Climate-based Disaster Risks
Extreme weather conditions which are expected to emerge with climate
change, such as floods, extreme precipitation and extreme weather conditions
threaten not only physical environment, but also human health and poses
a critical disaster risk. It’s important to be prepared for disaster caused by
climate change and take the necessary precautions (Kadıoğlu, 2001).
The Damage of Climate Related Disasters on Natural Areas.
Natural areas not only constitute pull factors of a destination, but also
provide ecosystem services. The climate-based disaster risks faced by these
areas also pose an indirect threat to tourism sector. Destruction of environment
means the loss of qualities that make tourism areas unique and attractive. This
is expected to create a negative impact on all tourism types, especially nature
tourism (Yıldız, 2009; Sevim and Ünlüönen, 2010).
Result and Discussion
Throughout Türkiye, climate change affects tourism negatively. However, it
is possible to prevent these negative effects thanks to adaptation and damage
mitigation strategies. On the other hand, changing climatic conditions can
also open the door to new opportunities. The tourism sector in Türkiye, which
has been developing for a long time, should benefit from its strengths and
use the emerging opportunities. In addition, it should focus on strengthening
its weaknesses to eliminate threats. To this end, the following suggestions are
proposed to make a basis for a road map regarding the opportunities of and
threats against climate change: Defining alternative tourism potentials in
terms of types and destinations.
• Strengthening the tourism infrastructure for alternative tourism
destinations.
• Identifying target tourist groups according to their potential to
generate income, concentrating on tourists that may spend more and
bring more foreign currency to the country.
• Establishing an integrated green transport system, providing railroad
transportation between destinations.
• Popularizing and promoting the use of alternative energy system
Promoting alternative tourism investments
• Adopting operational models that will allow the extension of tourism
season to four seasons.
• Varying indoor and outdoor activities.
