Renewal of Tourism Strategy of Türkiye based on the results of studies on
the effect of climate change will help tourism sector to endure in the future. It
will also help utilize the emerging potentials and mitigate risks. The focus of
new strategy document on possible changes in tourism sector, supporting new
destinations, and strengthening infrastructure as well as increasing adaptation
capacity will contribute to the fight for climate change.
It is worth noting that tourism sector, and particularly international tourism
demand are vulnerable to external effects and they are affected by various
economic, social, political, and demographical factors. These effects may
not emerge in the short term, but may soon lead to positive and negative
effects in tourism demand. However, unlike these abrupt changes, climate
change creates a cumulative impact that builds up in years, and happens in an
extended period of time. For this reason, the reactions of the tourism demand
to the effects of climate change may be observed in the long run.
This study reveals the opportunities and risks related to climate change in
the tourism sector of Türkiye and makes suggestions that may shed light on
future decisions of planning and investments. However, although this upper
scale approach presents a big picture, there is need for detailed analysis on
each tourism destination and type. For this reason, in future studies, the sub-
fields of each tourism destination may be examined in detail, and a basis can
be established for local adaptation and damage mitigation strategies.
