DISASTER RESISTANT BUILDINGS IN URBAN REGENERATION

ABSTRACT
Earthquakes, floods, landslides, hurricanes and forest fires are always natural events with
a high probability of occurring. Although people cannot prevent these natural events
from occurring, they can take precautions and make preparations so that these events do
not turn into a disaster. Within the scope of disaster preparedness, the concept of disaster
resistant cities has emerged. The 7.4 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Gölcük on
August 19, 1999, and the 7.8 and 7.7 magnitude earthquakes that occurred in Pazarcık
and Elbistan districts of Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023, and which were called
the disaster of the century, and the death of more than 50 thousand of our people; it has
bitterly reminded us of the importance of building safe structures that are resistant to
disasters and especially earthquakes through urban regeneration. In this study, the issue
of creating disaster-resistant structures in urban regeneration and how building safety
should be provided in this context were examined. This study concludes that instead of
repairing the damage after the disaster, it is much more appropriate to build disaster-
resilient structures with a proactive policy, both in terms of cost and loss of life. Within
the scope of the results obtained, some suggestions were made about creating disaster-
resistant structures within the urban regeneration.
