million 44 thousand 964 residences has been completed so far, changing
the faces of the cities. Moreover, cities and residents have increasing
opportunities for accessing new living spaces and social facilities along with
the urban transformation. The urban transformation of 289 thousand 140
independent units are currently ongoing throughout Türkiye in the scope of
environment- and climate-friendly green transformation. Adopting the idea of
horizontal architecture, barrier-free living, adequate number of social facilities
and technical infrastructure areas, protection of environment, preservation of
historical and cultural heritage and sustainability, efforts are continued for the
transformation of totally 6.5 million residences.
The Kahramanmaraş-based earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023
once again showed us the reality of earthquakes with a sad experience. This
earthquake marks as the disaster of the century that we faced as a country and a
nation. We lost more than 50 thousand lives as a result of these two consecutive
major earthquakes. These earthquakes which struck Kahramanmaraş, Hatay,
Adıyaman, Malatya, Adana, Osmaniye, Kilis, Gaziantep, Diyarbakır, Şanlıurfa
and Elazığ and affected directly 14 million citizens, caused substantial damage
on cities and their infrastructure as well as industrial areas, historical and natural
riches, rural settlements, irrigation, communication, logistics infrastructure,
educational and health institutions, places of worship, social facilities.
We continue our urban transformation studies in our earthquake-affected
provinces at fast pace as earthquake transformation and we revitalize all the
values inherited from our history with a participatory approach. In this scope,
we build totally 680 thousand residences including 180 thousand houses
that are already under construction. Furthermore, we have initiated On-Site
Transformation Project in our damaged cities. We will start the construction
activities quickly on the solid grounds that underwent survey and assessment
process under the control of our Construction and Transformation Offices
in 25 locations. We, as the Ministry, will supervise each stage of On-Site
Transformation Project step by step from licenses to the zoning. With our On-
site Transformation project, we will mobilize more than 140 subsectors, as well
as increase employment and accelerate moving back to cities.
We have also harmonized these resilient-increasing activities in urban
transformation with the Green Development Model declared by our President
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in 76th Session of the United Nations General
Assembly. In this sense, urban transformation has become the most powerful
and visionary instrument of the Green Development Model. We will sustain
our efforts for more livable cities continuously with the new models we have
developed to build climate-friendly, safe, livable cities and solid structures.
