Resilient Cities In Turkey For Sustainable
Economic Development
(The Presidency of Türkiye, Directorate of Strategy and Budgeting, 2022b).
The regular and efficient monitoring of the relevant indicators are important
in terms of realizing sustainable developmet goals.
Sustainable development is discussed in relation to the capacity to meet
the needs of future generations. In this respect in order to meet the needs
of today’s generations, there should be a development model that takes the
needs of future generations into account as well (The Presidency of Türkiye,
Directorate of Strategy and Budgeting, 2022a).
Common goals that take future generations into consideration aim to allow
opportunities to meet the needs for a better life, keeping the essential needs
of everyone in mind. In cases when the relationship between environment
and socio-economic development is not taken into account and the future
is ignored while meeting current needs, bigger problems may emerge in
the future. For this reason, applying a good development strategy may help
provide economic growth without disruption fo environment. To this end,
the interaction between economic and social infrastructure and environment
should be evaluated holistically, and current and future generations should
be allowed to benefit from the advantages of development equally. This is
the main theme of sustainable development, which should be emphasized by
every part of the society.
2. The Concepts of Natural Disaster and Resilience
On the official website of Turkish Language Association, natural disaster is
defined as “all disasters that cannot be prevented by humans, such as flood,
storm, earthquake, hail, and the like”. When considered in this respect, it can
be said that natural disasters are phenomenon that take place largely out
of human control. With the rapid population growth and globalization, there
has been an increase in natural disasters. Humans play a role in the natural
disasters today. For this reason, the damage and negative impacts created
by natural disasters are increasing with every passing day. Today, the negative
effects of natural disasters are not limited to the regions where they take
place. There has been an increase in the size and level of damage caused by
natural disasters.
There have been a dramatic increase in the natural disasters recorded
globally since 2000. It is observed that the characteristics of the recent disasters
have changed, affecting not just the relevant region, but also the other ones.
The effects of disasters exponentially increase like a domino effect, leading
to consequences in terms of economic, social, and environmental aspects as
well. There is an increase especially in the number, frequency, and intensity
