Figure 6: sustainable stream bed design: Cheonyecheon, the example of Seoul
The stream corridor, a space that occasionally hosts water play activities
and provides people with a chance to interact with water, is equipped with
lit lanterns at different times, and is a tourist attraction for local and foreign
tourists. The recreation activities that seasonally take place in the stream bed
continue in the green lines in the upper levels. It is stated that there have been
no loss of life or property during a flood in the Cheongyecheon stream so far,
which has early warning systems and the frequently placed exit ramps, stairs
and elevators. Over time, the project has contributed to the life quality of the
city to a great extent, turning into a valuable asset that changes the physical
appearance and the brand value of the city. It has affected all the property and
commercial values in the urban texture it flows through and attracted many
tourists, providing much more profits than the amount of its funding.
Results
Our cities are becoming increasingly impermeable, which causes the
disruption of balance between nature and artificial environment, and the
decrease in our life quality. The amount of hard surfaces increasingly outnumber
the green areas, which leads the rainwater cycle to be interrupted beyond
repair, causing negative effects of climate change to be even more visible.
Extreme droughts or sudden and extreme precipitation are bringing cities
to the edge of disasters. Looking at these undesirable incidents worldwide
with an inter-disciplinary approach to develop suggestions for solutions is a
must. Approaching water as if it were a static matter and solving the issue
through mechanical approaches by disrupting the relationship between water
