WATER SENSITIVITY IN THE CONTEXT OF
                         CLIMATE-FRIENDLY URBANISM

                                   Hayriye EŞBAH TUNÇAY

            ABSTRACT
Creating water-sensitive cities is an important urbanization and water policy
that needs to be developed as a requirement of the climate change that we
have to deal with in the twenty-first century. This article is prepared to address
what should be considered in the water-sensitive design of public open
spaces in a city. Information on how to develop water-sensitive and nature-
friendly designs throughout the city with the green infrastructure approach is
presented on 4 different typologies of public open spaces: 1- Parks, 2- Squares
and streets, 3- Transportation corridors, and 4- Urban waterways. The article
lists principles when creating water-sensitive cities with a green infrastructure
approach: Protect natural areas and enhance permeability in the urban fabric,
reduce the impacts of urban development on hydrology, manage urban runoff
close to where it starts, implement green and blue infrastructure strategies in
integrated water management in cities, understand the rainwater and gray
water as a source rather than waste and use them in a wider urban context as
            nature-based solutions.
