SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN RURAL

                AREAS: AGRICURTURAL EDUCATION PRACTICES
                            AND ADAPTATION FOR TURKEY

Asu İrem ÖZFIRTINA - Ruşen YAMAÇLI

                                            ABSTRACT
Rural architecture is a local architecture that reflects the historical and cultural aspects of the region to
which it belongs, containing traditional architectural knowledge and harmonizing with nature in the re-
gion. Unlike dense and vertically rising urban architecture, it takes inspiration from the surrounding to-
pography, local materials, and the traditions of rural people. Rural architecture and settlements play an
important role in sustainable development due to their ability to encourage construction suitable for the
natural environment, promote social life in an environment integrated with nature, and support economic
resilience. Sustainable rural development involves a holistic approach that considers the preservation of the
environment and culture, empowerment of society, and economic development. In the study conducted,
various efforts for rural development were examined to assess the current situation and potential. The role
of agricultural practices in sustainable rural development was identified, and the importance of quality
agricultural education to guide the younger generation towards new agricultural practices was emphasized.
The potential contributions of agricultural education to Sustainable Development Goals were highlighted,
and exemplary agricultural education systems in the world, such as those in America and the Netherlands,
were examined, comparing them with Turkey's current agricultural education practices to identify com-
monalities and differences. As a result of these findings, the connection of agricultural education to rural
development and subsequently to becoming a sustainable society has been determined. Turkey's deficien-
cies in this regard have been identified and the requirements for a qualified agricultural education structure
have been revealed in order for agricultural education to be preferred by young people and to become
                widespread all over the country.
