CLIMATE CHANGE RESPONSIVE TOURISM PLANNING:
OPPORTUNITIES AND THREATS FOR TÜRKİYE

ABSTRACT
Climate is an important factor in selection of tourism destination, the determination of tourism activities
and tourism period.. When the relationship between climate change and tourism is approached from
this perspective, it is seen that tourism dynamics in the world, popular tourism destinations, tourist
attraction and tourist producing centers will enter the process of redefinition, and different threats and
opportunities will emerge for different regions in this process. For sustainability of tourism in Mediter-
ranean Basin which is one of the most popular tourism destinations in the world and where Turkey is
located, it is very critical to foresee the opportunities and threats of changing climate on the sector and
plan accordingly. Increasing the resilience of tourism, which is an important economic sector for Turkey,
against climate change is possible by forming future tourism development, investment and incentive
policies by considering the foreseen threats and opportunities. This study aims to determine the oppor-
tunities and threats that tourism sector would face by taking into account the climate change scenarios
foreseen for Turkey and to provide suggestions that will form a basis for future tourism planning. For this
purpose, a detailed literature review is conducted and the findings are evaluated by SWOT analysis met-
hod. This study is important in terms of presenting the current and future situation of Turkiye’s tourism
against climate change and providing suggestions on this basis.
