                                         ABSTRACT
In this study, the processes of determining potential and active avalanche
release areas and preparing avalanche hazard maps in Türkiye are discussed
through the example of Palandöken Ski Resort. Firstly, active and potential
avalanche release areas (PÇBB) were determined and then these data were
transferred to the avalanche mobile application developed by the General
Directorate of Combating Desertification and Erosion (ÇEMGM) in order to
facilitate access and use by local people, security forces, climbers, skiers, etc. As
a result of the study, a total of 1.779 hectares of potential and active avalanche
starting zones were identified in the study area of 15,335 hectares. After the
determination of these zones, avalanche velocity, pressure, height, flow and
accumulation areas were calculated by using the two-dimensional Rapid Mass
Movement Simulation (RAMMS) software in order to reveal the boundaries
of avalanche flow and accumulation areas more clearly. As a result of these
simulations, the avalanche flow and accumulation areas were determined
as 6,605 hectares in total. The analysis shows that the gendarmerie station
and hotels in the study area are under serious avalanche risk and this risk
may cause greater damages in the future. Based on these simulation results,
avalanche hazard maps have been prepared in accordance with the mapping
standards developed by ÇEMGM and the existing avalanche hazards have
been evaluated. These maps are used in the planning of structures such as
ski resorts, cable car, chairlift lines, highway routes and settlements in the
region to determine the current and future avalanche hazards/risks and to
take necessary precautions. The study constitutes an important source for
planning and monitoring studies to be carried out in avalanche hazard and
avalanche risk areas through the example of Palandöken Ski Resort.
