ABSTRACT
The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) was adopted in 1994 to combat
desertification, land degradation and drought. The Convention aims to promote the conservation of
ecosystems through cooperation among countries and sustainable land management. The UNCCD
provides a global framework for combating drought and desertification while supporting agriculture,
water management and soil conservation practices, especially in developing countries.
The 16th Conference of the Parties to the UNCCD provides an important opportunity in this context.
The Conference will serve as a platform for the Parties to review their strategies to combat desertification
and develop innovative solutions. Expectations include strengthening international cooperation,
increasing funding sources and emphasising the role of local communities.
In conclusion, the UNCCD and the 16th Conference of the Parties constitute an important step towards
sustainable land management and combating desertification, supporting efforts to conserve land around
the world. This process is critical not only for environmental sustainability but also for economic and
social development.
The article explains Türkiye’s preparation process within the framework of the UNCCD COP16 Agenda
and the formation of the country’s positions and opinions in this process with examples.
