SUSTAINABILITY IN THE ERA OF TÜRKİYE
Mehmet Emin BIRPINAR - Ersin GÜRTEPE
ABSTRACT
We currently face a number of difficulties. The COVID-19 outbreak, followed
by the Russia-Ukraine confrontation, has worsened the situation. This has
resulted in inflation, disruption of food and energy supply systems, and a halt
to global economic growth.
The most recent WEF Global Risk Assessment REport indicates that the
top 4 of the 10 risks predicted in the 10 years are related to the environment
and climate. Furthermore, the latest report released by the United Nations
Environment Programme on the global emissions and adaptation gap shows
that the world is moving towards +2.4 C by the end of the century, and the
0
need to adapt is growing every year. However, in 2023, the global circularity is
calculated at 7,2 per cent which was 9 per cent before the pandemic.
Naturally, these events point to the need for immediate change and
transformation. In this way, the concept of sustainability, which has been in
place for 25 years, has become even more important.
Lower clean energy production costs make this transformation appealing,
while the transition to a circular economy, independent source-based growth,
is also needed to reduce pressure on resources. The fact that carbon policies
like the CBAM, a part of the European Green Deal, is also about to be
developed in the G7 under the German Presidency, as climate club; may be
seen as a step towards accelerating the transition to low-carbon development
on a global scale.
