Preface
Preface
s humans started to live together as social beings, the foundations
Afor the cities of today were laid. Cities, the most concrete indicator of
human history and civilizations, are places where we establish our homes, as
well as our living spaces and production areas. Additionally, our cities, which
embody our social identity and culture on the basis of our national values, act
as a bridge to transfer these values to future generations. For this reason, it
can be suggested that cities withstand time and become resilient as long as
the values that they embody exist. This is an important fact as it shows that
cities can be reinforced in terms of not only their technical and physical states,
but all their elements and values along with their architecture and areas of
use.
The need to grow due to population increase and other needs, requires
the development of sociological perception that involve the point of view
mentioned above, and necessitates the logical transformation of existing
structures. Cities need to grow without destroying the values and cultural
heritage they embody as well as transform and become resilient against all
kinds of effects. Otherwise, this will mean the disappearance of not only the
body of structures, but also the social memory.
Furthermore, it is also true that modern solutions have been produced
to provide growth for the city with all its natural, historical and cultural
aspects, minimize risks and threats, and increase its resilience. Among these
solutions, it is worth mentioning the technical and structural alternatives that
will increase the resilience of the city against disasters caused by climate
change, particularly earthquakes. However, it should not be forgotten that
the most important instrument for adaptation of existing cities to changing
circumstances is a well-planned “urban transformation”.
