Evaluation of Desertification and Erosion Combat Efforts With Regards to
Paris Agreement Commitments and Net Zero Emission 2053 Targets
addition, the decrease in the productivity of forests due to climate change
and the increase in wood production have negatively affected the carbon
sequestration capacity of forests. The protection and increasing of the
carbon sink capacities of forests in our country, along with the sustainable
ecosystem management, will contribute to Türkiye’s achievement of 2053 net
zero emission targets (IDB, 2024a). Desertification and erosion is addressed in
many strategy and policy documents published in Türkiye.
Strategic Plan of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry for
2024-2028 (TOBSP)
Strategic Plan of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry for 2024-2028
placed the combat against desertification and erosion at the very centre of
Türkiye’s strategies related to environment and climate change. According to
this plan, projects should be implemented to reduce the impacts of climate
change, desertification and erosion on agricultural production, and training
activities should also be focused on. Ensuring the sustainable use of land and
water resources, protecting groundwater and surface water, and measures to
be taken against floods and droughts are important elements of these efforts.
Moreover, it is aimed to increase the resilience against desertification and
erosion through R&D studies and to strengthen national and international
cooperation. (TOB, 2024).
Strategic Plan of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate
Change for 2024-2028 (ÇŞİDBSP)
Strategic Plan of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate
Change for 2024-2028 sets the targets such as increasing the capacity to
combat climate change and desertification and developing sustainable land
management models. These targets offer direct and indirect contributions to
the prevention of land degradation in the combat against climate change.
In particular, it is aimed to create carbon sink areas by ensuring sustainable
soil management within the scope of combating desertification and erosion.
In addition, planning studies are performed in order to increase the number
of preserved areas and to eliminate the infrastructure deficiencies in these
areas. National garden projects are expanded to increase public green spaces
while waste water and solid waste management are improved to reduce
environmental impacts. (CSIDB, 2024).
