DEVELOPMENT OF DESERTIFICATION MAPS
                  AND VULNERABILITY MODEL, TÜRKİYE

                                  Zehra KAVAKLI KARATAŞ

                                         ABSTRACT
Desertification has become an increasingly critical problem worldwide and in
Türkiye due to the negative effects of climate change and human activities.
There are extensive studies on this topic in the literature, and especially rapid
and irregular population growth and uncontrolled invasive of settlement areas
accelerate land degradation and desertification processes. In this review,
the studies conducted on desertification both worldwide and Türkiye are
examined in detail. In particular, the Desertification Model and Vulnerability
Map of Türkiye, developed in cooperation with the General Directorate of
Combating Desertification and Erosion and TÜBİTAK in Türkiye, is of great
importance as it is the first comprehensive study in this field in Türkiye.
Furthermore, small scale desertification studies have been carried out
in various regions in Türkiye as well. In the light of continuous advances in
science and technology, the studies on desertification are performed rapidly
both in Türkiye and around the world, and various new methodologies have
            been developed in this direction.
