INVESTIGATION OF URBAN GREEN AREAS
FROM THE FRAMEWORK OF SUSTAINABLE
URBANIZATION ON THE CASE OF AMASYA
Zeynep ÖZDEMIR - Merve ÖZKAYNAK
ABSTRACT
In the period from the 1980s to the present, it is seen that urban land use
cannot be managed effectively due to rapid urbanization and green areas are
rapidly destroyed due to urban rent. With the developing technology after
industrialization, new developments in building materials and construction
techniques have resulted in high-density residential areas. Due to the fact that
the green areas are not planned in accordance with the zoning plan standards
while designing the residential areas, the ecology and micro-climate of the
cities are gradually deteriorated, resulting in problems such as environmental
pollution. This situation threatens the sustainability of cities and negatively
affects leaving livable areas to future generations. With disasters such as the
Covid-19 pandemic, which has recently affected the whole world, we once
again come across how important it is to protect urban green spaces, which are
one of the building blocks of sustainable urbanization. In this context, starting
from the problem that urban green spaces are insufficient for sustainable
urbanization, this study aims to examine the city of Amasya as the sample. In
this paper, the settlement area in Amasya Center is divided into three regions
according to the spatial development periods: the historical city center, the
post-1960 development area and the post-1990 development area. In the study,
the distribution of green area types in different sizes and in different locations
in the separated regions was examined, and the compliance of the existing
green areas with the per capita m2 standards was investigated. As a result, it
has been determined that the green areas in the neighborhood scale of the
city of Amasya, which have developed over the years, are below the planning
standards. In addition, it has been determined that it faces with the problem of
rapid destruction of natural areas with the pressure of concretization. As a result,
suggestions were made to increase the green space capacities, which is one of
the sustainable development goals of the cities, specific to the sample area.
